Utah will host its first Stanley Cup Playoff game on Friday when the Mammoth face the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 3 of the Western Conference First Round at Delta Center, with puck drop set for 9:30 p.m. ET. The series is tied 1-1.
The home playoff debut comes with a scene the franchise is trying to turn into an advantage before the game even begins. Starting at 12 p.m. MT, the team invited fans to bring any official Golden Knights jersey to SeatGeek Plaza outside the arena and swap it for a new home 2025-26 Mammoth jersey at no cost.
It is a striking marker for a club that did not exist on the NHL map two years ago. The league’s Board of Governors approved a new franchise in Utah on April 18, 2024, and the response was immediate: Utah logged about 22,700 season-ticket deposits in little more than 24 hours. A welcome event at Delta Center a week later drew so many fans that organizers had to turn away hundreds.
General manager Bill Armstrong has said the building should feel the noise of that demand on Friday, telling fans, “We’re so looking forward to this being the loudest building in the NHL.” Captain Clayton Keller called the first arrival in Utah unforgettable, saying, “Stepping off the plane was unbelievable.”
The Golden Knights bring a very different history into the matchup. They entered the NHL as an expansion team in 2017-18, have reached the playoffs eight times in nine seasons and won the Stanley Cup in 2023. Their success helped lift the sport in the region, and Utah’s first home playoff game now arrives as another sign of how quickly hockey has taken hold there.
The crowd on Friday will also be watching past this round. Rice-Eccles Stadium is set to host the 2027 Discover NHL Winter Classic against the Colorado Avalanche around New Year’s Day, another major test of how far the game has spread in Utah. For now, though, the focus is on one building, one series and one chance for the Mammoth to make their first playoff home ice count.
