The Washington Commanders are hours away from making the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and Brandon Aiyuk is suddenly in the conversation. San Francisco is trying to move the receiver sooner rather than later, and the Commanders reportedly know he wants to land in Washington.
Jayden Daniels wants Aiyuk there, too. The Commanders are warming to the idea, but they remain reluctant to take on his contract and give up draft capital to do it, which makes a draft-night deal feel far less likely than the chatter around it.
That caution comes with real context. Aiyuk's only 1,000-yard receiving season came in 2023, and he has barely played since then. For the 49ers, that makes this the right time to listen. John Lynch said talks have taken place with potential suitors, but nothing concrete has come together.
Lynch also acknowledged the obstacle in plain terms: a trade during the draft is unlikely. That leaves the Commanders facing a familiar NFL decision, balancing a talent they want against a price they do not fully trust and a clock that is already running toward the seventh pick.
If Washington makes the move, it will not be because the fit is a mystery. It will be because the Commanders decided Aiyuk's upside was worth the cost, even with the contract, the injuries and the draft pick attached to him. If they pass, the 49ers may have to keep waiting for a deal that still has not found solid ground.
