A driver in an SUV led authorities on a high-speed chase across Los Angeles on Thursday night, reaching triple-digit speeds and weaving across freeway lanes before ending the pursuit on the 10 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley.
AIR7 was overhead shortly after 10 p.m. as the SUV raced along the 101 Freeway and later onto surface streets in the Hollywood area. The chase came to a sudden stop on the 10 Freeway, where the suspect surrendered to California Highway Patrol officers and was taken into custody at about 10:40 p.m. AIR7 video showed the suspect getting out of the SUV while holding a piece of paper before dropping to the ground and walking backward toward officers.
Authorities said the driver was wanted for speeding, a violation that set off a pursuit that moved from freeway lanes to city streets and back again. That mix of high-speed freeway driving and surface-street escapes is what made the chase stand out, even before it ended with the suspect giving up on the shoulder of the 10 Freeway.
The arrest closed a brief but fast-moving chase that drew eyes across two major freeways and part of Hollywood before CHP officers took the suspect into custody. What happens next is likely to turn on the speeding case that first brought authorities to the SUV.
