Brian Burns and the Giants now face a defensive rebuild after the Dexter Lawrence trade, with the No. 10 pick unlikely to solve it.

The traded to the for the 10th overall pick in the 2026 draft, and the move instantly left them with a massive hole in the middle of their defense. The 10th pick will not supply the answer at defensive tackle, and a player taken there would likely not be a tackle at all because the position is not ranked high enough to justify that kind of value.

That is the problem the Giants now have to solve, and the way out runs through more than one pick. Lawrence was an All-Pro tackle, and losing him strips the defense of the kind of centerpiece that cannot be replaced with a single swing at No. 10. For the deal to be a real win, the Giants need to turn him into multiple players, which is why the best path is to move down into the twenties and pick up a decently high second-round selection. If they can do that, they would hold four of the top 40 picks in the draft, including the fifth pick, and still have enough ammunition to chase the premium players they need.

That approach would also give the Giants another chance to satisfy the Jimmy Johnson Premium by extracting another quality pick, not just the 10th overall selection. The names in this draft class point to why that matters: Ohio State's , Texas Tech's and of Iowa State are all premium nose tackles, but they are expected to go around the back end of the first round or the top of the second round. Teams drafting near 10 would love to stay put and fill a need with one of the top offensive linemen or with a receiver such as or if either is still available. The Giants, though, are not looking for a neat fit. They are looking for volume, because one pick is not enough to replace Dexter Lawrence.

That is the hard truth behind the trade: the Giants traded away a foundational defender, and the only way to make the return work is to treat the 10th pick as a starting point, not the answer.
