says there is a real chance is about to bring back the Jimmy as a body-on-frame off-road SUV, and the latest signs are stronger than ever after the debut of the Boulder Concept at the 2026 New York auto show. The new Jimmy, if it happens, would be a midsize rival for the Bronco and Wrangler.

MotorTrend says reported that GMC is seriously looking again at plans that were once scrapped, and that it has heard similar talk from insiders. The discussion now centers on two directions for the truck: a modern look that borrows from the Acadia, Terrain and Yukon, or a retro treatment that nods to the C/K full-size Jimmy from the 1960s and 1970s.

The reason the idea has gained traction is simple. MotorTrend says this would not be the current Chevrolet Blazer, which is not the kind of real off-road SUV being discussed here. Instead, the proposed Jimmy would sit on an evolution of the 31XX-2 platform and would need the hardware to stand up to the segment's toughest names.

That means a five-link rear suspension with coil springs for a live axle, plus a front suspension that likely stays with a strut design and an independent front axle. MotorTrend says the current version of the 31XX-2 platform could likely accommodate a sixth-generation small-block V-8 with a transfer case and front axle, and it adds that the overhead valve V-8 is probably narrower than a long block TurboMax engine.

Engine choice would be part of the pitch. MotorTrend says an updated 2.7-liter turbocharged I-4 TurboMax could serve as the base engine, while a V-8 would be available under the hood. The timing is not nailed down, but the outlet says a 2029 GMC Jimmy is the year now being discussed.

That leaves GM with a straightforward test. A revived Jimmy can be a true off-roader or just another badge on a softer SUV, and the market already knows the difference. The Bronco, Wrangler and 4Runner set the bar, and if GMC moves ahead, that is the field it will have to enter.
