It is very early in the season, but the Toronto Blue Jays have already given themselves a problem that could echo into July. If they do not climb back into contention, a roster that looked built to compete could be headed for a drastic shift at the trade deadline.
The cleanest way to see the risk is through Kevin Gausman. The right-hander has been a consistent rock atop the Toronto rotation, posting a 2.54 ERA in five starts and 28.1 innings while allowing three runs or fewer each time out. He has given the Blue Jays a chance to win every time he has taken the ball, and if Toronto cannot get back in the race by July, he is the most likely of the club’s possible trade candidates to be dealt.
That is the kind of outcome that can catch a season by surprise, even in April. Any team can catch fire over a solid 20-game stretch at any point in a season, and history offers recent examples of clubs that started slowly and never recovered. Last season, the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves both stumbled early, then wound up selling at the trade deadline. Toronto’s sluggish start has put it on a path that could look uncomfortably similar if the slide continues.
Injuries may be the main reason the Blue Jays have not found their footing. That matters because the roster could look much different if the club never gets fully healthy and never gets going. A turnaround is still possible, but the longer the standings lag, the more likely Toronto is to consider moving players it would rather keep.
Gausman is not the only name that could be in play. George Springer and Daulton Varsho are also among the players the Blue Jays could lose this offseason or even earlier, with 2026 and 2027 looming as part of the broader roster picture. Gausman may be the most valuable of the group, but his value can cut both ways: if Toronto falls short, he is the arm other clubs would target first.
That leaves the Blue Jays with a simple but uncomfortable deadline test. If the team does not climb back into the race, Toronto may have to decide whether this is still a contender with bad health luck or a club that should start reshaping itself before July does it for them.
