Interstate 75 was snarled in Cobb County on Monday afternoon after a fuel spill blocked southbound lanes near the Delk Road exit and forced crews to work on cleanup in the travel lanes. Triple Team Traffic told drivers to use Highway 41 or Powers Ferry Road instead, and it was not clear how long the cleanup would take.
At the same time, northbound express lanes on interstate 75 were shut down in Cobb County for a fire investigation near Barrett Parkway. Cobb County fire said the blaze on the express lane bridge had been put out, and crews were inspecting the structure for damage after the fire was extinguished.
The two problems unfolded on the same stretch of interstate 75 in Cobb County, turning Monday afternoon into a double backup for drivers headed through the area. One issue centered on a spill near Delk Road. The other focused on a bridge fire near Barrett Parkway. Together, they left commuters facing delays in both directions with no immediate timeline for a full reopening.
The fuel spill cleanup and the fire investigation were separate incidents, but they hit the same corridor at the same time, creating a rare squeeze on traffic. Authorities had cleared the fire, but the damage check continued, while the spill response was still active and the southbound blockage remained in place.
For drivers, the immediate answer was simple: avoid the area if possible, and use Highway 41 or Powers Ferry Road if traveling southbound around the Delk Road exit. The larger question was how quickly crews could finish both responses and restore normal flow on a highway that was already jammed by two unrelated emergencies.
