Mumbai Indians went into Monday's gt vs mi clash in Ahmedabad with one win from five matches, bottom of the table and still searching for a first victory over Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Hardik Pandya walked back into the ground where he led Gujarat to their first IPL title in 2022, with the home side once again turning the venue into a fortress.
The matchup has been shaped by bowling on both sides, but only one attack has looked consistently settled. Mumbai's new-ball pair of Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult had struggled for penetration, while Jasprit Bumrah had not quite found his usual rhythm. Shardul Thakur, meanwhile, led their wicket charts with six but carried a 13.57 economy rate, a sign of how often Mumbai had been forced to trade breakthroughs for runs.
That imbalance has defined Mumbai's season. Their batting has been uneven, too, with the middle and lower order failing to finish innings consistently, and Mitchell Santner had already missed the previous match against Punjab Kings because of illness. In that same game, Quinton de Kock had filled in for the injured Rohit Sharma and struck a century, a reminder that Mumbai have had flashes of quality even as the results have gone missing.
Gujarat have come into the fixture with a more settled identity. Mohammad Siraj and Kagiso Rabada formed the new-ball pairing, while Rashid Khan applied pressure through the middle overs. Their batting has also leaned heavily on Shubman Gill, B Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, and Gill said after the last-over win over Kolkata Knight Riders that he would have liked to finish the chase earlier. That is the problem for Mumbai now: Gujarat have looked capable of winning in more than one way, while Mumbai have spent most of the campaign trying to solve the same questions every week.
Pandya's return gave the evening another layer, but the numbers carried the sharper edge. Mumbai had never beaten Gujarat in Ahmedabad, and with their attack still searching for control, that streak looked hard to break. If the visitors are going to change their season, they need more than one good spell or one big innings. They need a complete game, and they need it quickly.
