Colombia Sub-17 will face Argentina for the Sudamericano title in Paraguay, with the final carrying the weight of 33 years without a championship. For a team that has fallen short in recent runs, this is a chance to end the longest wait in its age-group history.
Colombia last won the tournament in 1993 in Armenia, when Germán “Basílico” González guided a squad he described as focused and clear in purpose. He said it was “a very pleasant memory,” adding that the team stayed motivated after reaching the first phase unbeaten and beating Argentina along the way.
That 1993 triumph remains Colombia’s only Sub-17 crown, even though the country has built a strong record in the competition. It won the 2003 Sudamericano Sub-17 without losing a match, beat Argentina 1-0 in the final round in Armenia and sealed the title with a 2-2 draw against Brazil in the last game, while Ronaldo Nazario was named the tournament’s best player after scoring eight goals.
The road since then has been close but not enough. Colombia finished runner-up in 2007 and 2025, and took third place in 2005, 2009 and 2017. The latest near miss came in 2025, when it lost the final to Brazil on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.
That is what makes this final different. Colombia reached it in 2026 after eliminating Brazil in the semifinal, while Argentina booked its place by eliminating Ecuador. The matchup gives Colombia another shot at ending a run that has stretched across three decades and through repeated near misses.
The setting adds to the significance. The final is in Paraguay, and Colombia’s youth history in the Eje Cafetero region includes titles in 1987, 1993 and 2005. But for the Sub-17 side, the 1993 victory stands alone as the country’s only championship before this final — and the measure of how much is on the line now.
