Luis Diaz exit explained as Bayern Munich forward on fire at new club

scored Bayern Munich's decisive goal in its Champions League quarter-final victory over on Wednesday, capping a night that ended 5-4 on aggregate. He had already struck Bayern's equalizer to make it 3-3 on the night as added time approached, before finished the job a few minutes later.

Diaz has been a revelation for Bayern since joining the German club last year, and his latest display only sharpened the sense that let him go at the wrong moment. He has scored more goals and registered more assists this season than his old Liverpool teammates have managed, a reminder of how much production he was giving to a side that paid him far less than many of the forwards around him. His wage did not reflect his standing as a key part of Liverpool's attack, and he first angled to leave in 2024 before doing the same again in 2025.

Liverpool and Diaz discussed an extension, but the Colombian's demands were not met. Bayern ultimately offered more than Liverpool was willing to pay, and the German club's contract reportedly gives him a gross salary in excess of $16 million per year. Liverpool agreed to let him leave because the fee was viewed as too good an offer to turn down, and the club received up to $88 million for the winger.

The move also fit Bayern's own needs. The club was seeking an attacking addition after Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool and Leroy Sane's departure from Bayern, with , Bradley Barcola and Jamie Gittens all on its radar but none joining. Liverpool, meanwhile, needed to recoup money after a spending spree last year. On Wednesday, Diaz gave both clubs a sharp verdict in one night: Bayern got the goal that sent it through, and Liverpool got another reminder of what it gave up.

That is the uncomfortable balance of the deal. Bayern bought the end product it wanted, and Liverpool sold when the fee looked too rich to refuse. Diaz is now delivering exactly what the German side paid for.
