Antoine Semenyo says playing for Ghana means living under a microscope. The 26-year-old forward said Black Stars supporters expect instant impact every time he touches the ball, and that any miss quickly turns into heavy criticism.
“In Ghana the expectation is, every ball I touch has to be in the back of the net. If it’s not, you’re crap. That’s how they are,” Semenyo said, laying bare the strain that comes with representing a national team followed with near-religious intensity.
The forward has been carrying that weight since his debut in 2022, when he began a Ghana career that has already reached 34 appearances and three goals. One of the clearest examples of his value came on March 23, 2023, when he scored a stoppage-time winner against Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
That pressure lands in a country where football is more than a sport and the Black Stars are a national obsession. Semenyo has become a key figure for Ghana since 2022, but the expectations around him do not leave room for much patience, even when the numbers suggest steady progress rather than instant perfection.
That gap between what Ghana demands and what any player can realistically deliver is what makes Semenyo’s position so unforgiving. He has scored three times in 34 appearances, a record that would be seen as serviceable elsewhere but is often judged in Ghana by the next shot, the next touch, the next missed chance.
The scrutiny is set against an even bigger stage ahead. Ghana is expected to face England, Croatia and Panama in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, giving Semenyo and his teammates another chance to answer a country that demands a result before it is willing to offer relief.
For Semenyo, the challenge is not only to score. It is to do so in a setting where every touch is measured against expectation and every mistake is treated like a verdict.
