Zachariah Branch was arrested early Sunday in Athens and booked at 1:26 a.m. on two misdemeanors tied to obstruction, according to the Athens-Clarke County arrest log. He was released on a $39 bond at 3:44 a.m.
The arrest came hours after Branch attended Georgia’s G-Day scrimmage on Saturday, where he was seen signing autographs for fans throughout the afternoon. Branch spent the 2025 season with Georgia after transferring from USC, then led the Bulldogs in receptions and receiving yards while setting a school record with 81 catches.
Georgia declined to comment on Branch, who had been projected as a second-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft set to begin Thursday. A full police report had not yet been released Sunday, leaving the circumstances around the arrest unclear even as the timeline on the arrest log was not.
The episode adds an abrupt off-field note to a player whose production had put him on the NFL radar. Georgia coach Kirby Smart had said Branch “met a lot to learn our system and learn our terminology,” called him “a football junkie,” and said, “There’s not a day I’ll leave the office that he’s not down there catching balls, running routes, doing extra.” Smart also said Branch “loves football, and that’s what one of the No. 1 qualities for being a good pro is, is do you love it?”
Branch’s brother, Zion Branch, is a safety for Georgia and had two tackles in the spring scrimmage. For now, the only facts that have surfaced are the arrest, the bond, and the silence around what led to both.
