Cherki now has 10 Premier League assists, leaving him second in the league standings and eight behind Bruno Fernandes. He is also chasing more than one benchmark: Dimitri Payet’s 12 assists in his first season in England and Juan Mata’s 13. For a player with only five France caps and one goal, that is a sharp rise in influence.
Pep Guardiola has helped shape the shift. The manager praised Cherki’s esprit libre and said his handling of pressure was the first quality he likes to find in a player. He also moved City back to a 4-2-3-1 system against Liverpool in the Cup quarter-finals on April 4 and placed Cherki at number 10, a role that let him operate closer to the final pass.
That usage marks a clear change from winter, when Cherki was named on the bench more often than in the starting lineup. He was a substitute in the 3-0 loss at Real Madrid on March 11 in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, and he was again on the bench in the 3-1 Cup match at Newcastle four days earlier. Guardiola initially sounded less certain about the player’s best fit, even as Cherki later replied with more direct production.
The path has also included pain. Cherki took a heavy blow to a thigh in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham on February 1, but he has had no discomfort for nearly a month. By March 22, he was even juggling during the League Cup final against Arsenal, a moment that drew mixed reactions in the United Kingdom and hinted at both his confidence and the scrutiny that follows him.
For City, the immediate issue is simple: if Cherki keeps turning chances into goals, the treble chase gets harder to stop. For the player himself, the next target is just as clear — keep producing, keep Guardiola convinced, and keep closing the gap on the two assist marks that now sit in front of him.
