Kolkata Knight Riders reached the halfway stage of the IPL without a win and with just one point in the bag, leaving them needing to win all of their remaining eight games. They faced Rajasthan Royals at Eden on Sunday with Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership under scrutiny and the season already close to the point of no return.
The pressure has only grown on a side that has looked directionless and low on morale, even as Cameron Green’s role has shifted from match to match. Green batted at No. 3, No. 6 and No. 4 in different games, made 79 against Gujarat Titans and did not bowl in that match after sending down two overs each against LSG and CSK.
Rajasthan Royals arrived from a very different place in the table, having been running away with much of the glory before their last-match loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. They also came into the contest with three good days of practice in Kolkata, while KKR had spent the previous week on the road.
That contrast matters because KKR are not just chasing points, they are chasing any sign that the season can still be rescued. Royals have been able to reset after one defeat; KKR have been trying to find a shape, a rhythm and a response, and Sunday’s meeting at Eden offered little margin for error.
The problem is not only the standings. It is the lack of a settled plan, the constant movement in Green’s batting position and the sense that Rahane’s side has not yet found a reliable formula. For KKR, the next eight games are no longer a run of fixtures. They are a test of whether this campaign can still be made to look like one at all.
