Garret Anderson, one of the most accomplished players in Angels history, died at 53 after a heart attack, his wife Teresa told's Michael Eaves on April 17. The club will honor him for the rest of the season with a memorial patch on its jerseys beginning with Friday’s homestand, and it will hold a moment of silence and show a tribute video before that night’s game.
The Angels said Anderson was a quiet superstar, and the numbers back it up. He played 15 seasons with the club and remains the franchise record holder for games, at-bats, hits and total bases, making him one of the defining figures of an era that included the 2002 World Series championship.
Anderson himself understood what that kind of recognition meant. At his Angels Hall of Fame induction, he said it was humbling when someone took the time to honor his accomplishments, and that it did not have to be done. He added that being part of an organization with a rich tradition meant a great deal, because it placed him alongside players who came before him.
The tribute also reflects how the Angels viewed him inside the clubhouse. Owner Arte Moreno called Anderson one of the organization’s most beloved icons and said he was a cornerstone throughout his 15 seasons, with a stoic presence in the outfield and around the team that helped elevate the club into years of continued success. Moreno said Anderson would forever hold a special place in Angels fans’ hearts for his professionalism, class and loyalty.
There is also a sharper edge to the remembrance. The Angels said their tributes will continue through the rest of the season, but the loss is already personal for the family he left behind, including Teresa and their three children, Brianne, Bailey and Garret “Trey” Anderson III. For a franchise that built part of its identity around his steady production and quiet force, Friday’s homestand begins a goodbye that will not be brief.
