Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton will main event WrestleMania 42 Night 1 for the WWE Undisputed Championship, a match built on 20 years of history between two men who came into WWE in the same era and spent long stretches shaping each other’s careers. The latest Randy Orton injury talk has only sharpened attention on a showdown WWE has not pushed as heavily on this year’s road to WrestleMania, even as the matchup itself carries one of the deepest backstories on the card.
Their first real collision goes back to 2007, when Orton slapped Dusty Rhodes during Cody Rhodes’ first backstage segment on Raw, and then wrestled Dusty at the Great American Bash. A year later, Orton and Rhodes formed The Legacy with Ted DeBiase Jr., and in 2009 Rhodes and DeBiase helped Orton fend off Triple H and win the Royal Rumble. Rhodes said he would never forget watching Orton at the Royal Rumble, pointing at the WrestleMania sign and thinking, “I want to be like him.”

WWE has leaned more on Jelly Roll and Pat McAfee during this year’s WrestleMania buildup, which has left the Rhodes-Orton story to carry itself. That creates a strange gap between the emotional weight of the matchup and the way it has been framed publicly. Orton’s direct link to Dusty Rhodes gives the bout a deeper family thread, but it also means the match can never be just about a title or a ranking; it is about a history that began long before either man was a main-event headliner and still has one more chapter to write at WrestleMania 42 Night 1.
What happens in that ring will decide the championship, but it will also settle whether a friendship, a rivalry and a lineage that began in 2007 can finally be closed in one night.
