Kentucky was still hosting Furman transfer guard Alex Wilkins on Thursday afternoon, with the Wildcats continuing to press for one of the most sought-after mid-major players in the transfer portal. Wilkins began his visit Wednesday evening and remained on campus as Kentucky worked through a key stretch of its portal push.
Wilkins averaged 17.8 points and 4.7 assists per game at Furman last season and shot about 33 percent from 3-point range, production that helped make him one of the best mid-major transfers available. UConn also has interest in him, adding another layer to a recruitment Kentucky is trying to close while the visit is still underway.
Kentucky's portal efforts are centered on two names right now: Wilkins and Syracuse transfer forward Donnie Freeman. Freeman concluded his visit Wednesday and was expected to visit UConn on Friday, leaving Kentucky in a battle that could shape the top of its incoming class.
The Wildcats see Wilkins as a potential major piece in the portal haul, and the timing matters because the school is trying to finish the job during the visit period rather than let the race drag deeper into the offseason. For Kentucky, keeping Wilkins on campus into Thursday suggested the pursuit is still live, and the next move in the Freeman recruitment could tell just how quickly the rest of the class comes together.
