The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said Friday it is aware of an incident between San Jose and Modesto involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement in California. The agency said the suspect was transported to a local hospital, but it did not provide any other details about the shooting.
Residents were told to expect traffic delays for the rest of the day because of road closures. The scene sits in Stanislaus County, home to Modesto in Northern California’s San Joaquin Valley, where ICE activity has already drawn close attention. A report last week by The Modesto Bee said there had been at least 18 arrests by ICE in the county over the last six months.
The timing adds another layer of strain. The Department of Homeland Security has been in a shutdown since its funding lapsed on Feb. 13, while Congress remains at odds over Democrats’ push to implement reforms to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Lawmakers are in recess and are not due back on Capitol Hill until Friday, when the House of Representatives returns to session.

Stanislaus County’s economy is tied to agriculture as well as transportation corridors, with a 2023 report saying almonds brought in more than $813 million and milk more than $761 million. For now, the sheriff’s office has offered the basic outline of a fast-moving scene: a shooting, a hospitalized suspect and closed roads. Those delays are expected to last through the day.
