Reece Potter is coming back to Kentucky basketball for the 2026-27 season, announcing Wednesday afternoon that he will return to Lexington for his senior year after sitting out all of last season with a chronic health issue.
Potter, who joined the Wildcats last season, wrote on Instagram, “I’m back. Let’s go to work, BBN.” He earned a redshirt after spending the entire season on the bench, preserving at least two seasons of eligibility as he heads into another year with Kentucky.
The timing mattered. Kentucky picked up Washington guard Zoom Diallo on Wednesday afternoon, and Potter’s return gave the program another frontcourt piece as it continues to shape its roster. Mark Pope said Potter’s health issue carried a long recovery timeline, which explained why the 6-foot-11 big man never got on the floor last season.
Potter’s path to Lexington was already unusual. The Miami, Ohio native spent two seasons with the Redhawks before transferring to Kentucky, where the Wildcats needed help inside last season. At Miami, Potter shot nearly 40% from behind the arc, a skill that could still matter once he is finally able to play for Kentucky.
For now, the move is less about what Potter did on the court last season than what he missed and what Kentucky still expects from him. A year on the bench cost him a season of game action, but it also kept his eligibility intact, and the Wildcats now get another shot at a player they had hoped to use right away.
The next step is simple enough: Potter has said he will be back for the 2026-27 season, and Kentucky can start planning with one more body for the frontcourt. After a lost year, his return gives the program a rare second look at a player whose best college basketball is still ahead of him.
