Schools across southeastern Wisconsin canceled evening activities on Friday as a severe storm threat moved across the region, forcing districts to pull back on sports and other after-school plans.
Milwaukee Public Schools canceled after-school recreation, athletics and other programs, and the Wauwatosa School District did the same, joining other districts that scrapped evening activities because of the weather threat. The cancellations affected sports and extra-curricular programs as schools tried to keep students out of harm’s way while the severe weather risk remained in place.
The decision reflects the practical response districts often make when forecast conditions turn dangerous late in the day: cut short anything that would keep students, staff and families on the road or outside after school. In this case, the threat was specific enough to reach into the evening schedule, and broad enough to force multiple districts to move at once.
What matters next is whether the severe weather threat eases enough for schools to resume normal after-school and evening schedules, or whether additional districts will follow Milwaukee and Wauwatosa in canceling more activities before the night is over.
