Wrexham sit seventh in the Championship table with 64 points from 42 matches, but their grip on a playoff place is under pressure after dropping points in five of their last seven games. Last weekend’s draw away at Birmingham City left Phil Parkinson’s side four points adrift of the final playoff position with four fixtures left.
The club’s first season back in the EFL Championship since 1982 has already turned into a landmark campaign, and Wrexham are almost certain to finish higher than they ever have before in league football. But the final stretch has tightened around them. Hull City are in pole position for sixth with 68 points, while Wrexham, Hull and Derby County are fighting for the last playoff spot as the table compresses around the cut-off.
There is still a narrow route into the top six, but Wrexham must make up four points on Hull across the final four matches to have any chance of getting there. Coventry City need only a point to seal automatic promotion to the Premier League, while Ipswich Town, Millwall, Southampton and Middlesbrough remain in the chase for the last automatic place.
Wrexham host Stoke City this weekend knowing the margin for error is gone. The season has already delivered the kind of rise the club could barely have imagined a few years ago, but the championship standings now demand a finish strong enough to keep that story alive for one more round.
