Coventry City are back in the Premier League after a 1-1 draw with Blackburn on Friday turned a tense finish into a decisive one. The result secured a top-two finish in the EFL Championship and guaranteed promotion, ending the club’s 25-year absence from the top flight.
Haji Wright was on the bench at the start and came on as a 62nd-minute substitute, a small but telling part of a season in which he led coventry city in league goals with 16. The U.S. forward started 29 games this season and has become one of the most productive attackers in the Championship.
Coventry finished on 86 points and held a 13-point lead over third-place Millwall, who had a maximum of 12 more points available. They were also 11 points clear of second-place Ipswich, though Ipswich had two games in hand. Either way, the margin was enough to make promotion certain on Friday.
The move back up carries real weight for a club that last went down after the 2000-01 campaign. Coventry then spent 34 years in the top division before that relegation, and the return caps a steady rise under Frank Lampard, who was hired in November 2024 and guided the team to a fifth-place finish and a promotion playoff semifinal loss to Sunderland last season.
Wright’s path to this moment has been just as direct. He joined Coventry in 2023 from Antalyaspor in Turkey on a four-year deal that runs through June 2027, and his season form has kept him in the frame for the United States. He was on the U.S. roster for the 2022 World Cup, scored in the 3-1 round-of-16 loss to the Netherlands in Qatar, and then followed that with two goals in a 2-1 friendly win over Australia in October and a start in a 5-1 win over Uruguay in November.
His promotion also adds to a growing American presence in England’s top flight. Following Coventry’s rise, Wright is poised to join U.S. teammates Tyler Adams, Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson and Brenden Aaronson in the Premier League.
That is the broader prize for Coventry City: not just a single result, but a return to the level the club spent decades trying to reclaim. For Wright, it means a chance to take his scoring form into the Premier League and push his case again ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
