added AI-powered nonplayer characters to on April 16, giving developers an experimental Conversations system that can talk, react and respond to players in real time.

The feature, previously called the Persona device, lets creators build characters with personalities and voices that can remember what has already happened in a session, answer in context and trigger in-game events. Epic said the system can turn an NPC into an AI-powered character through authored dialogue trees, but publishing projects using the tool is not yet available.

The update pushes Fortnite further into AI-driven interaction after players already saw AI-voiced characters in 2025, including a recruitable Darth Vader. This time, the company is limiting the feature’s use from the start: developers cannot create a persona for medical or mental health guidance, and they cannot build one that role-plays or simulates a romantic partner.

That makes the headline question less about whether is fortnite down than whether Epic is testing how far AI belongs inside one of gaming’s biggest creative tools. For now, the answer is no: the game is not shutting down or breaking in the update, but it is opening a new experimental layer that could change how islands are built once publishing is turned on.
