West Virginia University Police issued a community notice Thursday after an alleged attempted armed robbery downtown on campus ended with a suspect in custody near Houston Street and McLane Avenue.
A University employee reported that a man approached them near Summit Hall with a white-handled item believed to be a knife and demanded money, according to police. The suspect ran off after being confronted, and officers took him into custody shortly afterward.
Chief Sherry St. Clair said officers used the description to quickly track the suspect and eliminate any threat to campus. The report involved WVU Police and locations on the Morgantown campus, where the encounter unfolded before officers moved in.
St. Clair said the fast response from people in the area helped officers close in quickly, and she urged members of the University community to report suspicious activity they see. WVU Police can be reached at 304-293-3136, in person at 886 Chestnut Ridge Road, or anonymously through the LiveSafe app.
