Brian Kelly stepped into a new role as an analyst for CBS Sports Network’s Inside College Football on a preview segment for the 2026 NFL Draft, his first major public appearance since LSU fired him late in the 2025 season. Sitting alongside Brent Stover, Beanie Wells and Kevin Carter, Kelly sounded less like a coach on the outside looking in than a veteran still trying to read the sport’s next turn.
Kelly praised former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s patience and development during the segment, then turned to the 2026 wide receiver class and called it an “all-you-can-eat buffet.” The appearance immediately put a familiar voice back in front of a national audience, even as his status in the game remains unsettled. Kelly has said he would consider coaching again only if college football changes in the ways he believes are necessary, including reforms to NIL, transfer rules and scheduling.
That stance matters because Kelly’s LSU tenure ended amid cultural friction and unmet expectations, the kind of split that left both his future and the school’s direction under a cloud. The CBS role gives him a platform without requiring a return to the sideline, but it is not yet clear whether the analyst job is permanent or simply a bridge back into the sport. For now, Kelly says he plans to visit both college and NFL programs to observe operations and stay connected, a sign he is keeping one foot in the game even as he decides whether to come back to it.
What happens next is straightforward enough: if the changes Kelly wants never come, his next chapter may be in the booth, not on the sideline.
