Milwaukee flooding shut down major stretches of freeway in Milwaukee County on Wednesday evening, April 15, as officials warned drivers to stay away from flooded roads and expect conditions to worsen. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said all southbound lanes of I-43 were closed at Becher because of flooding, and a full northbound closure at Holt was expected. Additional closures were in place at I-43 and Mitchell, while both directions near the Stadium Interchange on Brewers Boulevard were also closed.
Marquette University police issued multiple alerts as flooding continued around campus, warning of dangerous conditions and telling people to stay inside, avoid standing water and not drive through flooded areas. Authorities also told people not to drive near 15th and Kilbourn because of flooding. City spokesperson Jeff Fleming said crews were out across Milwaukee to address street flooding, and people were told they could report flooded locations by calling 414-286-CITY. Drivers who had to travel were advised to plan ahead and use caution.
The scene showed how quickly the weather turned the city’s roads into trouble spots. The sheriff’s office, Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Marquette police all pointed to the same problem: flooding was not limited to one block or one roadway, but was spreading across campus and into key traffic corridors. For anyone trying to get home Wednesday night, the main question was not whether the roads were bad, but which ones were still passable.
That answer, for now, was increasingly limited. With freeway closures stacking up and crews still working across the city, the situation was still active by Wednesday evening and officials were warning it could get worse before it improved.
