Phillip W. Vaught was taken into custody April 10 in Mississippi after a months-long Hendersonville Police Department investigation into a delayed report of abuse involving an underage girl. He has since been indicted on multiple charges, including continuous sexual abuse of a child, especially aggravated sexual exploitation, statutory rape by an authority figure and sexual exploitation of a minor.
The case matters now because police say the investigation developed evidence indicating the abuse had occurred, turning a delayed complaint into a criminal case with serious felony charges. Vaught is being held on a $1.5 million bond.
Detectives began looking into the allegation months before the arrest, after receiving the delayed report. The Hendersonville Police Department said the case involved allegations of sexual abuse involving a juvenile, and it urged anyone with information about this incident or others like it to contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 264-5303.
Police also said anonymous tips can be reported to Crime Stoppers at 594-4113, submitted by text to 274637 using keyword TIPHPD, or sent through the P3 Tips Mobile Application. The question now is not whether the case moved forward, but how far the evidence reaches beyond the allegations already laid out in court.
