Milwaukee police shot and killed a 31-year-old man Monday after a pursuit that began with a traffic stop tied to a homicide earlier in the day. The chase ended near 35th and National after the suspect got out of the vehicle and fired at officers, police said.
Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said a 27-year-old was shot and killed near 7th and Mitchell around 5:30 a.m. Monday. Investigators later identified a vehicle believed to be connected to that killing, then found it near 35th and Walnut during a separate shots-fired incident before officers tried to stop it around 4:45 p.m.
Police said the driver fled, led officers on a pursuit and crashed near 35th and National. The suspect, identified as the sole occupant of the vehicle, then exited and fired shots at officers, who returned fire and struck him. He was taken to a hospital and later died, while police said firearms were recovered from him and no one else was hit by gunfire.
Norman said a 34-year-old involved in the crash was taken to a hospital with non-fatal injuries, and a few other vehicles were struck during the incident. Eight Milwaukee police officers fired their weapons: a 35-year-old officer with more than eight years of service, three 33-year-old officers with more than 14, nine and eight years of service, two 30-year-old officers with more than 11 and seven years of service, a 29-year-old officer with more than three years of service and a 26-year-old officer with more than seven months of service.
The sequence tied the officer-involved shooting directly back to the earlier homicide. What began as a morning killing near 7th and Mitchell turned into an evening pursuit across the city after the same vehicle surfaced again, this time during a separate shots-fired call. Police said the suspect was the only person in the vehicle, and he died after exchanging gunfire with officers.
