Highway 140 is closed in Mariposa County between Bear Creek Bridge and Cedar Lodge after multiple rockslides struck the road Sunday when a storm system moved through the area. The shutdown is blocking access to Yosemite National Park for travelers using the route.
Caltrans said motorists need to find an alternate route for the time being, and cleanup and assessment efforts are ongoing. There is no estimated reopening time.
Highway 140 is one of the main highways into Yosemite, but the park is still reachable via Highway 120 and Highway 41. For travelers who had planned to come in on the closed road, the immediate answer is simple: not yet, and not that way.
The tension is in the gap between the damage already done and the lack of a timeline to fix it. Rockslides can clear quickly or drag on depending on what crews find on the slope, but for now officials have given no estimate for when the yosemite highway 140 closure will lift. Travelers heading to the park will have to reroute and keep checking conditions before they leave.
