said 30-year-old tried to break into a home in the 1700 block of Burbank Court on Tuesday by kicking in the front door, then entered through a sliding glass door when that failed. The homeowner, whose wife and child were inside, armed himself with a shovel and confronted Nichols as the suspect came in.

The confrontation turned physical, and police said both men suffered head injuries. Officers arrived within minutes and found Nichols outside the residence, then took him to NorthBay Medical Center before booking him later into the on multiple felony charges.

The homeowner’s husband was away when he saw Nichols on a security camera and immediately rushed back to the house. Fairfield police said the situation raised “concern” because of the woman and child inside, and praised “the actions of the homeowner, who worked to protect his family while officers were responding to the scene.”

Police said the case was already spreading online as video of the confrontation circulated on social media, but the facts that mattered most were settled on the scene: a fast-moving break-in attempt, a violent struggle at the front of a family home, and an arrest that kept a woman and child from facing the suspect alone.
