left Monte-Carlo on Sunday with a loss, a dropped number one ranking and a warning that the clay season is already putting him under pressure. beat him 7-6, 6-3 in 2h 14m in the final after saving momentum in the first set, then controlled the second to take the title.

Alcaraz had led by a break in both sets and still could not close it out. After his debut last Tuesday against Sebastián Báez, he had already said losing the top ranking was only a matter of time and that he would do what he could, with the goal of feeling as good as possible. That outlook framed a week in Monte-Carlo he later called complicated.

The Spaniard still reached the final by beating Báez, Bublik and Vacherot, and by holding off in the round of 16. After Saturday’s win over the Monegasque player, he went straight to the practice court to try to sharpen his game. He said after the semifinal that he had not hit the ball as he wanted, and during the match against Etcheverry he admitted it was very difficult to trust when he did not have feeling with the ball.

Sinner said afterward that the result came down to details and that Alcaraz is going to improve. The Italian also noted the conditions were demanding, with wind and a low bounce making the ball hard to control, while both players were tired. He said the tension was there throughout and described it as a good match overall.

The ranking change may not last long. Alcaraz could regain the world No. 1 spot if he wins the Barcelona event for the third time on Sunday, a reminder that he still has a direct route back to the top even after a setback that followed too many points to defend. Sinner, meanwhile, has now won and in March and has 17 wins in the last 40 days, a run that underlines how quickly he has become the force to beat on the tour.

For Alcaraz, the problem is not the mathematics. It is the level he needs to find before the next big clay-court test. He left Monte-Carlo knowing the margin at the top is already thin, and that one more uneven week could turn a temporary slip into something harder to fix.
