The Boston Celtics hosted the Orlando Magic on Sunday night in an Eastern Conference matchup shaped by the injury report as much as the standings. Boston came in at 55-26 after beating the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday, while Orlando arrived at 45-36 after a win over the Chicago Bulls.
Jett Howard and Jonathan Isaac were both upgraded to questionable for Orlando, according to Jason Beede, leaving Howard in danger of missing his fifth consecutive contest and Isaac still on a restricted workload after sitting out 20 of Orlando's last 21 games. Beede also reported that Boston filed an injury report with multiple key players either out or doubtful for the game against the Magic.
For Orlando, the latest report mattered because the roster has been forced to absorb those absences for weeks, and even a questionable tag did not guarantee a return. For Boston, the bigger blow was immediate: Jayson Tatum was ruled out with right Achilles repair management and was set to miss his second consecutive contest, while Jaylen Brown was ruled out with left Achilles tendinitis and was set to miss his first game since April 9.
That left the matchup to be defined by who could actually suit up, not by the records alone. The Celtics had already banked a dominant home win over New Orleans, and Orlando had protected its place in the race with a road victory in Chicago, but Sunday night's game in Boston turned on the final injury status of seven players and the depth each side could summon when the stars were unavailable.
The result of a game like this often follows the same logic as the report that came before it: availability decides the night before the opening tip even does.
