Ryan Reynolds says Welcome To Wrexham will run for three more seasons, with the actor and club co-owner telling his 50 million Instagram followers that “season five premieres May 14 and we’ve been renewed for three more”. The announcement keeps the FX series going as Wrexham fight to stay in the Championship promotion picture.
The show launched in 2022 and has already won 10 Emmy Awards and two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, turning a lower-league club’s rise into one of sport’s most watched revival stories. Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham for £2m in February 2021, and since then the team have climbed from the National League to the Championship while the stated aim has stayed the same: reach the Premier League.
That long climb is now being played out in real time. Wrexham are currently just outside the Championship’s play-off places, and the series renewal lands while Phil Parkinson’s side are trying to keep their season alive. Parkinson said the presence of Reynolds and McElhenney at the club “lifts the whole place”, a line that fits a project built on football results and celebrity attention in equal measure.
There is still a football problem inside the celebration. Parkinson urged his play-off chasing side not to be too disheartened by their 5-1 loss to Southampton as they head to Birmingham City, a reminder that the next step for Wrexham standings will be decided by points, not publicity. Kieffer Moore is ready to make an impact in the Championship run-in after recovering from injury, and Matty James is bidding to play a key role after returning from a two-month spell out with a foot injury.
For Wrexham, the renewal means the cameras will keep rolling while the club tries to turn a feel-good story into the final climb that matters most.
