Yoel Romero and Hector Lombard will meet in an MMA bout without gloves on May 1 in Miami, after Jorge Masvidal announced the matchup Friday night during Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA’s event in the Dominican Republic. Both men were in the crowd when the fight was revealed, and the broadcast said they stayed there because organizers feared they might start fighting each other in the cage.
The pairing gives Gamebred another high-profile name fight and brings together two veterans who have spent recent years working outside the traditional MMA scene. Romero, who is about to turn 49, has been active in Dirty Boxing, BKFC, other bare-knuckle organizations and RAF wrestling, and he most recently dropped a controversial decision to Vagab Vagabov at IBA Bare Knuckle 4 in March. Lombard, 48, is set for his second appearance under the Gamebred banner after winning his promotional debut in November 2023 by knockout in 69 seconds.
Romero’s resume still carries the weight of a UFC and Bellator veteran, while Lombard has already built a bare-knuckle track record of his own, including a BKFC title. But both have also taken heavy recent shots: Lombard was knocked out quickly by James Cannon at DBX 3 in August, a result that makes this return to Gamebred more than a nostalgic booking. For Romero, it is another stop in a run that has kept him visible across several combat sports, even as he nears 49.
The matchup sits at the point where age, name value and attrition all meet. Neither fighter is being asked to rebuild a career here; the draw is that both are still dangerous, still known and still willing to step into a bare-knuckle cage against someone who can answer back.
