Amazon Fire TV users can still find free streaming through the Amazon Appstore, with apps such as Tubi and Kanopy available on devices powered by the Fire TV platform. For people trying to avoid another monthly bill, the apps offer a direct alternative to paid services.
BGR said it found free streaming apps on Fire TV that require no cost whatsoever, and it singled out Tubi as one of the best. Tubi says it has more than 300,000 movies and TV episodes available at any time, and the service says it will forever be 100% free to watch.
Tubi is supported by advertisements, but Fire TV users can install it from the Amazon Appstore without entering a credit card, and they do not need to set up an account before they start watching. The service also includes live TV, international entertainment and Tubi Originals, giving it more range than a bare-bones free catalog.
Kanopy takes a different approach. It offers access to thousands of films, including popular movies, world cinema and documentaries, and says new titles are added weekly. The library can be searched by filmmaker, cast members and title, and it does not play ads.
There is one catch: Kanopy requires a library card and works through partnerships with libraries and universities. That makes it less open than Tubi, but it also gives Fire TV users another route to free streaming at a time when paid subscriptions can add up quickly, especially after Netflix recently raised its prices.
The larger point is that Fire TV is not just a home for paid streaming subscriptions. For users willing to trade convenience for a little setup, the platform still has free options that are easy to install, easy to try and, in Tubi's case, free to start watching almost immediately.
