Maximo Adams is staying with North Carolina after the Tar Heels hired Michael Malone as their next head coach. The four-star recruit told’s Paul Biancardi on Saturday, April 11, 2026, that he is not decommitting.
Adams, the first player to commit to North Carolina’s 2026 class, said he will remain a Tar Heel despite the coaching change. The California native chose North Carolina over Texas, Michigan State and Kentucky, and he made clear the move did not shake his view of the program.
“I’ve always wanted to play for the Tar Heels,” Adams said. “It was my dream school growing up, and I’m excited to be coached by Coach Malone.” For North Carolina, that matters because the roster for the 2026-27 basketball season is still far from complete, and any early loss from the class would have added more uncertainty.

Malone’s arrival already has prompted plenty of players to enter the transfer portal to test the waters, a reminder that the coaching change is still rippling through the program. Adams’ decision gives North Carolina a needed hold in the 2026 class, but the attention now shifts to five-star guard Dylan Mingo, who had not announced his decision as of Saturday.

North Carolina needed a public sign that one of its key young commitments was still on board, and Adams gave it to them. The next question is whether Mingo follows the same path or leaves the Tar Heels waiting longer for clarity.
