San Diego gets a bright start today, with plenty of sunshine expected and afternoon highs near 80 degrees before humidity climbs later in the day. Overnight lows should settle in the mid-60s, keeping the region mild even as the air turns a little stickier after sunset.

The short-term forecast turns more unsettled after that. Highs on Thursday are expected to reach about 80 degrees again, though a few light showers are possible during the day. Friday looks like the best chance of rain for the week, with much of the area likely to pick up between 0.25 and 0.75 inch through Friday night. The weather service said the period brings an upper-level disturbance into a fairly moist atmosphere. “This day will bring our best chance of rain for the week as an upper-level disturbance moves into the area and combines with a fairly moist atmosphere,” it said. After that, the chances for showers drop off sharply by Saturday morning, when the forecast still carries a 40 percent chance of showers, before easing to 30 percent on Sunday. Most of next week should stay on the warm side, with highs holding in the low 80s.

The pattern is a familiar one for this stretch of weather san diego: warm days, a touch of cloud cover and a brief run of rain chances that do not fully clear the board. The forecast also comes with a bit of perspective after Monday’s lunar flyby, when four astronauts traveled around the far side of the Moon. “I’m not sure I’ll ever look at the Moon the same way again,” the weather service said in celebrating the Artemis II mission, a reminder that the same days bringing beach weather here were also marked by a milestone in space.

That mix of sun, warmth and changing shower chances is the real story for the next several days. Today is the calmest day of the stretch, Friday is the wettest, and the rest of the week sits somewhere in between.
