Eintracht Frankfurt travel to Wolfsburg on Saturday with Europe on the line, and VfL Wolfsburg come in carrying the kind of defensive numbers that make every minute feel like a problem. The Bundesliga meeting kicks off at 15:30 ET in the Volkswagen Arena, with Timo Gerach set to referee a match that will be shown live on Sky, in the DAZN conference and on Eintracht FM.
The first leg in Frankfurt finished 1-1, but the recent form around this one makes the return feel sharper than a routine league game. Frankfurt lost 2-1 in Mainz and drew 2-2 in Cologne before this trip, while Wolfsburg were beaten 6-3 in Leverkusen last time out. SC Freiburg is also piling pressure onto Frankfurt in the race for Europe, which gives every point extra weight this late in the season.
Albert Riera said Frankfurt are fighting for a place in Europe next year and described that as the better sort of pressure. He said Wolfsburg are fighting against relegation and urged his side to slow the game down, control it more and turn that pressure into an advantage. Dieter Hecking, meanwhile, said Wolfsburg need the right balance against Frankfurt: active play, but also the ability to absorb pressure without losing structure. He said Leverkusen exposed them when they drifted from that shape.
The numbers behind this matchup are not kind to Wolfsburg, either. They have conceded 63 goals, the same total as 1. FC Heidenheim, making them the Bundesliga's most vulnerable defenses. They have also already caused 13 penalties. Frankfurt, for their part, have not kept a clean sheet against Wolfsburg since December 2012 and have won just 11 of the 53 meetings between the clubs. Their last away win came in November, a 4-3 result in Cologne.
Frankfurt arrive with several absences. Jean-Matteo Bahoya is out with a training deficit, Nnamdi Collins after ankle surgery, Ritsu Doan because he is ill, Kaua Santos with a medial ligament injury in the knee and Rasmus Kristensen after syndesmosis surgery. Wolfsburg have a longer list, with Cleiton, Bence Dardai, Kilian Fischer, Marius Müller, Kevin Paredes, Rogerio, Jenson Seelt and Jonas Wind all unavailable, Konstantinos Koulierakis suspended after a fifth yellow card and Matthias Svanberg doubtful.
The summer signing of Christian Eriksen gives Wolfsburg some experience in the middle of the field, and they have leaned on him to lead the attacking play. But this fixture has been decided as much by control as by flair in the past, and both teams need the points badly enough to make that balance matter. Frankfurt cannot afford another slip if they want to keep Freiburg at arm's length, while Wolfsburg need a result that starts to drag them out of the danger they have been circling.
