Viktor Gyökeres and have emerged as ’s new attacking solution, a pairing that grew out of the chaos of injuries, poor form and title-race pressure rather than ’s original plan. The manager did not start the season with two strikers in mind. He expected Havertz to lead the line and Gyökeres to wait as a reserve option while he adapted.

That changed because Arsenal had to change. Arteta was forced to experiment during a season when injuries hit, form dipped and the need for results became harder to ignore. From those tests came a structure that looks more flexible and, for now, more dangerous. Gyökeres is physically strong, keeps moving and stretches defenders. Havertz works the spaces he creates, linking play, finding his position and arriving in the right place at the right time. Together, they have given Arsenal a route to goal that was missing for much of the campaign.

The scale of the shift can be seen in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over in the first leg of the , when Havertz scored from a chance created by Gyökeres’ intelligent movement. The goal mattered not just because it decided the match, but because it showed the pattern Arteta has been chasing. Gyökeres pulls defenders out of shape. Havertz moves into the gap. Arsenal have found a second way to hurt teams when one route is blocked.

That matters because the problem in the second half of the season was not a shortage of chances. It was a shortage of variety. Arsenal could arrive around the edge of the box, but too often the attack looked repetitive. The Gyökeres-Havertz partnership opened a different direction. Arsenal can now play more directly, use long balls or attack the space behind a back line that has been drawn forward. Gyökeres has become a key player in that setup, and his goals and shooting output rose sharply once he began playing alongside Havertz. Havertz, meanwhile, has improved his finishing even as his number of shots has fallen, a sign that his role is changing from striker to connector.

There is a practical bonus too. Moving Havertz slightly deeper helps preserve his fitness after a season affected by injuries, while Gyökeres’ presence gives Arsenal a more forceful point of attack. But this is still a work in progress. Their understanding is only at an early stage, and the partnership needs more time together before anyone can call it complete. Arteta also still has to balance the performances of and , which means the final version of Arsenal’s attack may still be a moving target. For now, though, Gyökeres and Havertz have given Arsenal something it lacked for too long: another way to win.
