Andrew Painter gave the Phillies exactly the kind of first impression they needed. In his MLB debut, the right-hander ended Philadelphia’s three-game losing streak by allowing one earned run and striking out eight in 5.1 innings of a 3-2 win over Washington.
Now the Phillies head into Phillies vs Giants on Monday night in San Francisco, with first pitch set for 9:45 pm ET against a club that is 3-7 and has been described as having the worst offense in the majors. Adrian Houser, who will start for San Francisco, is 0-1 with a 1.69 ERA, but the Giants have averaged only 1.86 runs per game at home and carry a 30.00% win percentage into the game.
The timing matters because Philadelphia is trying to steady itself after a rough trip to Colorado. The Phillies had won four straight before losing 4-1 on Sunday, with Taijuan Walker allowing all four runs in the defeat. Walker is now 0-2 with a 9.41 ERA, leaving the rotation with pressure to answer back quickly in a series that could show whether Painter’s debut was the start of something or just one bright night.

That is where the matchup gets sharper. The Phillies are averaging 4.33 runs per game on the road, and they have some clear numbers working in their favor against Houser. Bryson Stott has two home runs against him, while Houser is allowing 10.12 hits per nine innings. Philadelphia also has several hitters producing steady contact, with Trea Turner at.289 after 11 hits in 38 at-bats and Brandon Marsh leading the team with a.303 average, 10 hits in 33 at-bats and four extra-base hits.
For San Francisco, the concern is not just Houser’s start. The Giants staff has a 1.36 WHIP and a 4.65 ERA, and the lineup has not given it much support. That combination is why a Phillies team coming off a strong debut from Painter and a bounce-back need after Colorado looks built to test the Giants early, especially if Philadelphia can keep carrying the edge it showed when the rookie ended the skid.

Painter’s debut bought the Phillies a little breathing room. Monday night will show whether they can turn that into something more lasting.
