McIlroy eventually described the order of his major breakthrough in plain terms: “I found the first three pretty quickly and pretty easily in my career,” he said, before adding, “That last one was my kryptonite.” He also said, “I just couldn't -- I couldn't figure out a way to get it done,” and, “And I kept trying. The tension around his Masters pursuit only sharpened in 2022, when he posted a career-best 8-under 64 and finished runner-up after holing out from the right greenside bunker. That round showed how close he had come, and why the 2025 win carried more weight than a normal major title: it closed the one gap that had defined the second half of his career. McIlroy arrived at Augusta as one of the sport’s defining players and left it with the final piece in place.
