Rory McIlroy won the Masters in April 2025 and completed golf’s career Grand Slam, becoming only the sixth man to capture all four major championships. The victory ended years of frustration at Augusta National and placed the 35-year-old from Holywood, Northern Ireland, alongside Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
For McIlroy, the finish was the latest chapter in a career that began on a 6,100-yard parkland course overlooking Belfast Lough. Holywood Golf Club, founded in 1904, first saw his talent in 1994, and Eddie Harper admitted him in 1996 after an interview when McIlroy was 7, even though the club’s minimum age was 10. Harper recalled a polite boy in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt who told him, “Mr. Harper, if you let me into this club, I'll not hold anybody up. I know all the rules of golf and I'm a very quick player.”
That club became the starting point for a player who later worked with longtime coach Michael Bannon and climbed quickly through the game. McIlroy shot 80 in the final round of the 2011 Masters and blew a four-shot lead, then won the U.S. Open that same year at 22. By 25, he had added the Open Championship and the PGA Championship, leaving Augusta as the lone major that kept slipping away.

McIlroy eventually described the order of his major breakthrough in plain terms: “I found the first three pretty quickly and pretty easily in my career,” he said, before adding, “That last one was my kryptonite.” He also said, “I just couldn't -- I couldn't figure out a way to get it done,” and, “And I kept trying. And I kept coming back. And, probably since 2011, driving out of Augusta National every Sunday night disappointed, and...”

The tension around his Masters pursuit only sharpened in 2022, when he posted a career-best 8-under 64 and finished runner-up after holing out from the right greenside bunker. That round showed how close he had come, and why the 2025 win carried more weight than a normal major title: it closed the one gap that had defined the second half of his career. McIlroy arrived at Augusta as one of the sport’s defining players and left it with the final piece in place.
