Wisconsin’s deepest NCAA Tournament run in his three seasons came in 2024-2025, when the Badgers got to the second round, and now the program loses a player who could create offense at a level few guards in the portal can match.
His next stop matters because the teams that could use him are already in transition. Illinois is losing Keaton Wagler and Kylan Boswell from its backcourt after making the Final Four this year, Houston’s guard trio of Kingston Flemings, Emanuel Sharp and Milos Uzan is moving on after this season, and UCLA has watched Tyler Bilodeau and Donovan Dent graduate while Skyy Clark entered the portal Tuesday. That gives Blackwell a crowded but realistic field, with each of those programs needing help on the perimeter.

Illinois would bring a family connection — his father, Glynn Blackwell, played there from 1984-88 — but the Illini are also replacing pieces from a backcourt that helped carry them to the Final Four. Houston is retooling around departures at three guard spots, and UCLA is still trying to find a way past a stretch in which it has not advanced beyond the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament for three seasons and did not reach the field in 2024. Blackwell is not just a scorer available in the portal; he is the kind of scorer teams often build around, and that makes his decision one of the more consequential ones left in this cycle.
