When Citlalli Jocelyn Vázquez Mercad arrived last month in a part of town near her home where many stray dogs live, she expected another routine check on animals in need. Instead, she found a mother dog and her puppies, including one little pup who looked entirely gray and then turned out to be brilliant white after a bath.
Mercad works with Defensa Nacional de Lomitos, a group that brings stray dogs food and water and monitors their health. She said she and her colleagues first saw four puppies with the mother dog, then noticed a fifth, smaller one. Unlike his spotted siblings, the newcomer looked gray, and the rescuers decided that day to bring the family to their shelter so they could be kept safe and later placed in new homes.
That night, the gray puppy preferred to sleep in his rescuer’s arms. The next day, after the puppies were given baths, the reason for his color became clear: under the dirt, he was white. Mercad said the discoloration was just grease and grime, and the puppy was later named Polar.
The surprise became the kind of story that spreads fast for a reason. Polar’s transformation video went viral, and Mercad said it helped the rescuers find excellent homes for three of the puppies. Polar, one sibling and their mother still needed homes after that, even as the mother dog was later spayed and the puppies received names and a clean bill of health from the vet.
Mercad said the reaction has been a reminder that small acts can matter. Polar, she said, showed how much a life can change with love and attention, and she added that his mom and little siblings deserve the same chance to find homes filled with love. For the rescuers, the video did more than entertain: it pushed the adoption effort forward and gave the family a better shot at the future they were brought in to have.
