head into Thursday's IPL 2026 meeting with carrying a problem that has become hard to ignore, and Ajinkya Rahane's duel with may decide how much of it they can solve. Rahane has never been dismissed by Shami in the league and has scored 94 runs off him at a strike rate of 165, while KKR are trying to recover from a poor start that has left them ninth in the 10-team table.

That makes the matchup more than a side note. Shami has taken three wickets in two games this season, all in the power play, and he opened with KL Rahul's wicket off the first ball of IPL 2026 before going on to tear through Sunrisers Hyderabad's top order. His power-play economy rate is 4.00, and the minimum of three overs he has already delivered suggests KKR will have to confront him early if they want their innings to settle.

Rahane has had a steady enough start with the bat to keep his place under discussion rather than in doubt. He has made 83 runs in three matches this season at a strike rate of 148.21 and an average of 41.50, but his role at the top has still drawn criticism from fans who want to open with instead. That debate sharpened after KKR's opening two losses, then grew louder when their match against Punjab Kings was washed out on Monday, leaving them with little momentum and little room to absorb another slow start.

The pressure on Rahane has not only been about runs. After KKR's 65-run defeat to , he pushed back at criticism of his strike rate and defended the way he is approaching the role. He said people questioning him were either not watching closely or had an agenda, said they do not like him playing and suggested they were jealous of the success he has had. He also said he was not too worried, that his intent was there and that he backs himself rather than worrying about what others are saying.

That is the tension in Thursday's game. Shami is in early-season rhythm and has made a habit of striking before the innings settles, while Rahane is being asked to answer criticism by batting in the one place where Shami does most of his damage. If KKR are to move out of the bottom half of the table, Rahane may need to make his best case against the bowler who has never quite managed to beat him.
