The Atlanta Braves survived a tough road series against the Dodgers, but the weekend ended with concern for Sean Murphy. The catcher left Sunday’s game in the seventh inning after his glove was hit on a swing by Hyeseong Kim, and he was pulled after getting hit on the hand/wrist on the catcher’s interference.
Braves manager Walt Weiss said after the game that Murphy exited following the play, and current reports said X-rays on his finger were negative. That mattered because Murphy had just returned from the injured list, leaving the club to watch closely for any setback after a day off Monday.
The sequence came in the seventh inning Sunday, when Kim’s swing struck Murphy’s glove and the catcher was forced out of the game. Weiss later gave the injury update, saying Eli White was also in concussion protocol and that Murphy left after the hand/wrist contact on the interference call.
For Atlanta, the larger relief is that the early testing did not show a fracture, but the concern is not gone. Murphy’s status will matter because he had only recently been back in the lineup, and the Braves have already spent enough time adjusting around injuries this season. The club’s next step is to see how the hand and wrist respond once the day off ends and the team resumes work.
