Naoyuki Kataoka is going to Augusta. The 28-year-old from Hokkaido Prefecture won the Japan Open Golf Championship in October 2025, beating Satoshi Hara in a one-hole playoff and earning a place in the 2026 Masters field.
Kataoka had trailed Taisei Shimizu by seven strokes overnight at 1-under 209 heading into the final round in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, but he shot a 2-under 68 and kept his title hopes alive with a 6-meter putt on the par-4 18th hole to force the playoff. He finished Hara off in sudden death to claim the biggest victory of his career and the route to his Masters debut. The win also sent him to the British Open in July.
For Kataoka, that meant entry into one of the hardest fields in golf. The 2026 Masters runs from Thursday, April 9 through Sunday, April 12, and he will be among 91 golfers in Augusta, Georgia. Qualifying for the Masters is one of the sport’s main goals, and for Kataoka, the Japan Open was the only door.
That makes his next step especially notable because Hideki Matsuyama will also be at Augusta National Golf Club. Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, is set for his 15th Masters appearance, and he and Kataoka both attended Sendai’s Tohoku Fukushi University before turning professional. The two played a practice round together on Monday, and Kataoka came away impressed. He said he was amazed by Matsuyama’s technique, especially the way he set up his irons and the quality of his shots, and added that it was incredible.
The contrast between them is sharp. Matsuyama arrives with years of Masters experience and a green jacket. Kataoka arrives with one breakthrough win that changed his calendar. For now, that is enough: one playoff at Nikko turned into a ticket to Augusta, and the next test begins in April.
