The Kansas City Chiefs will get the standalone spotlight to open the 2026 season, hosting the Denver Broncos at 8 p.m. ET on Sept. 14 in the season premiere of Monday Night Football, announced.
A location for the game has not yet been finalized, but the matchup already carries the feel of a Week 1 measuring stick. The Broncos ended Kansas City’s nine-season run as AFC West champions last season, and all signs point to Denver quarterback Bo Nix being back from the ankle injury he suffered in the AFC Divisional Round win over the Buffalo Bills.
The bigger question hangs over the other sideline. Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL in Week 15 of last season, leaving the Chiefs to open the year with their two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP working back from a major injury. That uncertainty gives the opener an edge the league rarely gets in its first prime-time game of the year.
The timing makes the announcement especially notable, with the full 2026 NFL schedule set to be revealed Thursday at 8 p.m. ET. Until then, the Broncos-Chiefs game stands as the first matchup on the calendar with a clear national stage and two teams arriving with unfinished business.
If Mahomes is ready, the opener will test Kansas City’s hold on the division after Denver’s breakthrough. If he is not, the Broncos will walk into a prime-time game with a chance to make an early statement against the team they just knocked off its AFC West perch.
