The NFL will unveil its full 2026 schedule Thursday night, and one of the first marquee games already has a date: the Detroit Lions will visit the Buffalo Bills in Week 2 on Sept. 17. The game will be played on Thursday Night Football at brand new Highmark Stadium and will air on Amazon Prime Video.
The matchup carries immediate weight because these are two teams being discussed as Super Bowl contenders entering 2026. Buffalo finished the 2025 season 12-5 before falling 33-30 in overtime to Denver in the Divisional Round, while Detroit went 9-8 and missed the playoffs. Joe Brady, 36, was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach in January, adding another layer to a season that already begins with pressure.
The league has begun rolling out marquee games before the full schedule release, a practice that lets the biggest dates land before the flood of the complete slate. This one stands out because the Lions and Bills last played a regular-season game on Dec. 15, 2024, at Ford Field, when Buffalo won 48-42 in a shootout that featured Jared Goff throwing for 494 yards and five touchdowns and Josh Allen finishing with 362 passing yards and four total touchdowns.
That game set the tone for why this rematch is drawing attention now. It was fast, high-scoring and close enough to linger in memory, and the new meeting gives both teams a chance to show whether they are built for a deeper run this time. Buffalo will have the added draw of opening a showcase game at its new home, while Detroit gets an early road test against a contender that has already proved it can trade blows with anyone.
