The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran running back Ameer Abdullah on Tuesday, adding an 11-year NFL player who has been used as a runner, receiver and return man across five teams.
Abdullah, who entered the league as a second-round pick, 54th overall, in the 2015 NFL Draft by Detroit, has played 154 career games with 26 starts. He arrives in Jacksonville with 2,054 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns on 508 carries, plus 219 catches for 1,567 receiving yards and 11 scores.
The move gives the Jaguars a player with a long track record in multiple phases of the game. Abdullah spent his first four seasons with the Lions from 2015 to 2018, then played for the Vikings from 2018 to 2021, the Panthers in 2021, the Raiders from 2022 to 2024 and the Colts in 2025.
His value has extended beyond offense. Abdullah has returned 170 kickoffs for 4,346 yards and 10 punts for 91 yards in his career, while also recording 39 tackles and one fumble recovery on special teams.
Jacksonville’s roster update also included the signing of offensive lineman Sal Wormley, who originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Jaguars in 2025 and spent last season on the practice squad. The Jaguars sent defensive lineman Maason Smith to the Falcons in return and waived offensive lineman Cooper Hodges.
For Jacksonville, the sequence points to a front office still shaping the bottom of the roster with veterans and developmental depth. Abdullah is the most established name in the group, and his experience across offense and special teams gives the Jaguars a plug-in option while the rest of the roster settles around him.
