U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized $44,690 in unreported currency from a 54-year-old American-Peruvian traveler at Philadelphia International Airport on April 30 after a K9 currency detector dog alerted officers to the money. The traveler was bound for Cancun, Mexico.
CBP said the cash was hidden in the traveler’s pockets, carry-on bag and separate envelopes. Officers said the man verbally and in writing declared he had $10,000, but the search turned up far more. Nitro, a 3-year-old male chocolate Labrador retriever, was the dog that triggered the inspection.
The agency said it kept all of the money and returned $240 to the traveler for humanitarian purposes. Federal law requires travelers to tell CBP when they are carrying more than $10,000, whether they are entering or leaving the United States.
Elliott Ortiz, a CBP official, said no amount of concealment can hide bulk currency and urged travelers to truthfully report any cash they carry. He said the warning is especially important as the busy summer travel season approaches, and said those who fail to do so face severe consequences.
The seizure fits a broader enforcement pattern at airports and borders that has become more aggressive in recent months. CBP data showed currency and other monetary instrument seizures totaled $37.9 million as of March 2026, after reaching $66 million in fiscal year 2025, as the agency has tightened screening on passengers entering the United States and on outbound flights.
The question now is not whether the rule exists. It does. The issue is whether travelers understand that a declaration of $10,000 is not a guess, and that a bag, a pocket or an envelope can turn a routine trip into a seizure in a matter of minutes.
